Brazils in Newfoundland:

John, cooper of Bristol, in possession of land at Port de Grave before 1729
John, of Harbour Grace 1776
Ann Brazill of St. John's 1794-95
Thomas, from Kilmaida Co. Limerick
Unidentified shoreman of Little Placentia (now Argentia), deceased, 1811
John Brazel, from Bray Co. Wicklow, married at St. John's 1817
Anne Brazil, of Trinity 1818
Peter, of Kings Cove, 1822
Mary Anne Braseel, Brazell, or Brazil, of Fogo Harbour 1823
Cornelius Brazil, of Tilting Harbour (now Tilting) 1825 (Note 1)
Joseph Brazell (and others), of Spaniard's Bay 1871
Joe Brazil, a Micmac of Conne River 1905 (Note 2)

Note 1
Cornelius is a name associated with Co. Cork, Ireland and it is unusual to find it associated with Brazil. In all the records only one other has been found with that name. This was a sailor from Waterford, Ireland. From an examination of the relevant dates it is possible that he is a relative, son/nephew, of the Nefoundland Cornelius.

Note 2
Micmacs are an Indian tribe who immigrated to Newfoundland from New Brunswick and have been fighting for native Indian status for a long time. There is a large contingent of Brazils in the Micmac community. The name may come from intermarriage on the mainland and not in Newfoundland.

The Brazil's in Newfoundland are predominately in the following areas:

Bristol's Hope, Spaniard's Bay, Fermuse and Renews, St. John's, and New Harbour in Trinity Bay. The St. John's and Bristol's Hope contingent are Church of England and they are a different family from the Catholics. Their immigration came quite early in the history of Newfoundland and, in general, they were poor, illiterate people. The rest are part of one family. The New Harbour portion came from Spaniard's Bay.

The Renews and Fermuse area of Newfoundland (just south of St. John's) is all Irish. In fact the language there is spoken with a strong Irish accent similar to a Dublin accent. These people have always been able to read and write as they were educated by the clergy of the time.

Michael Brazil of Ballylongford, Co. Kerry, Ireland wrote to the Secretary of State for the colonies on April 29, 1834 seeking information about the location of his sons William and John Brazil who came to Spaniard's Bay or Bay Roberts in 1812 (War of the Roses). He was receiving support from them until 1820 and he was no longer able to support himself.
